Great site! Nice picture, Brooke!

Let's just say I can talk way faster than I can text. - - I'm also too old to learn a new language - shorthand was bad enough! Yeah, I'm THAT old:(

It is difficult to read an entire paragraph in text form. And when writing it, I had to try really hard to shorten as many words as possible. I think it comes more natural on a phone, especially when there are only 12 buttons to use (no smart phone here). I suppose to get more message for the price of one, abbreviations will always be in use seeing as though there is a universal limit on phone messages of 160 characters. And as an added trivia fact, twitter limits the characters to 160 so that people can tweet no matter what kind of phone they have.

Maybe The American Heritage Dictionary will have a text version. There are quite a few websites out there that have the abbreviations. I must be too old though — I didn't understand most of them.

You bring up a great point, Jamie, about the natural progression of a language. New words are added to the language all the time. Google use to be a number I said when I was a child. Now it is a search engine.

I am concerned that the younger generations are losing the ability to spell out words though. As a country that prides itself on being a leader, I am afraid that the technology is ruining our ability to be the top speller in the spelling bee. But we also need to remember to separate longhand from shorthand. After all, when we are taking notes, abbreviations help us out.

A friend of mine, Khelsey Ceaser, is a teacher. She said her students would rather text her than email her. Email took the place of "snail mail" — does that mean texting is taking the place of email? Are we relying on instant responses? In some cases that is a good thing.

"Texting" only makes sence when it's on a cell phone and the person needs to limit and ease communication via texting. But in a forum like this it's just annoying, and I prefer to just ignore a poseter who uses the texting lingo. There should be a Texting dictionary or some means of creating a texting "standard" so that everyone will understand what on earth your texting.

Hi. I am a Communication Studies Major. From what I have read about studies in the UK on cell phone use and linguistics, they found that there is actually a higher (positive) correlation between those who have a better grasp of the language and the amount of texting they do. We all know correlation does not mean causation, so we should avoid saying that. However, in the past we have had similar things happen to the language. These are, again, linguistic terms such as "clipping" "blending" etc... And they have happened since language did...just not as quickly perhaps. It turns out we get sick of the words our parents used and their parents used and so the language evolves to match those sentiments. Its an amazing thing :) but ill bore you no longer--I just think that it is a natural progression and I don't think texting should be pinned as the enemy.

I like being able to text when I have a quick message to get across. On the other hand, I despise having lengthy conversations through texts – I'd much rather talk on the phone or speak face to face.

I prefer texting over the phone call. If I want a conversation I will talk on the phone...but I usually don't want a conversation. Short and quick; nice and easy.

Texting is good for communicating, but bad for writing. I also figured out that I need more nimble thumbs.

I'm a "texter" and admit it appeals to me because it's fast and easy. But I also think this trend will have consequences – we’re loosing an important element in relationships.
